Using audio content from stock platforms
When developing applications aimed at user-generated content using copyrighted materials, developers often turn to stock platforms.
But have you carefully read the terms and conditions under which music stock platforms grant rights to use music?
Audio content for stock platform users is provided based on a license. The scope of use depends on the type of license provided and the restrictions set by the stock platform.
In practice, music stock platforms may allow users to:
- Download audio content
- Play audio
- Modify, adapt, and more.
In each specific case, the terms of use can be found on the selected stock platform's website.
Prohibited ways of using music from stock platforms include:
- Using only for non-commercial purposes.
Any attempt to use the content for commercial purposes (such as resale) is not allowed.
- Distributing content in its original form and/or as a standalone object.
- Prohibition on the use of audio content for the purpose of engaging in competing activities. Restrictions on the amount of downloadable content can also be set jointly with such a prohibition. In this way, the stock platform protects itself from the appearance of competitors who have used their own content.
- Sub-licensing content to third parties. Some stock platforms also include a direct prohibition on using audio as part of a music library or video templates.
Note that despite the established restrictions and prohibitions, services may offer specialized individual solutions for a separate fee and under individual licensing conditions.
