Regulation of Artificial Intelligence in the United States: A Brief Guide for Businesses
The United States remains the largest market for the development of artificial intelligence technologies. Unlike the European Union, where a single regulatory instrument — the AI Act — is in force, the US system of AI regulation is still developing on a “patchwork” basis: federal guidance is combined with numerous laws enacted by individual states.
This structure creates additional legal risks for companies: requirements may differ depending on the state, the sector, and the specific manner in which artificial intelligence technologies are used. At the same time, the US administration is taking steps towards establishing a unified federal approach to AI regulation.
For the purpose of providing practical guidance to businesses, we have prepared a brief guide setting out the main features of AI regulation in the United States, the key requirements of state legislation, and recommendations for managing legal risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence technologies.
